This right here is my most favourite neighbourhood dinner spot. It’s just 5 minutes from my apartment. Last June marked two whole years of living in Happy Mansion, Petaling Jaya and in that time it has really grown into “my” corner of the city, I’m happy to say it feels like home around here. The people here all know my name, often engaging me in small talks in the morning, my neighbours feel like family to me, we eat together, go on excursions to Family Mart for soft serve ice creams and also, the people I met at Butter & Beans who are now important people in my life, namely Andrew and Celina. It was a rainy afternoon in September and I was craving for steamed fish. Andrew made a call and later said, “We’re having steamed fish tonight”. I was introduced to Uncle / Lengchai B’s Bentong Ginger Steamed Fish and it changed my world! It is now, a weekly affair with my two friends and sometimes more. The shop is humble and unassuming. I am not surprised if this gem of a place is a neighbourhood secret, but I believe, good food needs to be shared. So here I am, sharing this with you.

My absolute favourite – Steamed Pak Su Kong. I crave for it and I look forward to Saturday dinners with Andrew and Celina. What’s so special about Uncle / Lengchai B’s steamed fish is the ginger (and also, LOVE) that he so generously use for his dishes. Believe me, because I asked around – my mother, who runs a catering business told me, “Are you crazy? It’s expensive. People only use it for home!” If you know me, you would know that I have an obsession with steamed fish and I have tasted many throughout my life and none are even close (or as haunting) to this. I told all my friends about it and also brought some special ones there.
The entry level fish – Bentong Ginger Tilapia. It’s so hearty and yummy, I could finish this whole plate myself.
Bentong Ginger Tiger Steamed Fish – If you don’t fancy fresh water / farmed fish, you can opt for this. It’s slightly more expensive compared to the other two options, but honest to God, you won’t regret it.
I am so, so, so happy this gem of a place is in my neighbourhood and I have to thank Andrew and Celina for introducing it to me. It’s Saturday, and I am mighty excited!
